My name is Kate Mitchell, and I’m the writer/publisher/nonsense-creatorr at Kate the (Almost) Great. I’m a twenty-something from Maine living in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to running this blog, I work at an education nonprofit and spend a zillion hours at Massachusetts General Hospital. This is because I live with several chronic illnesses: rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, postular orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, anemia of chronic inflammation, and asthma. I’ve been in pain since fall 2001 and had far too many surgeries. I’m also obsessed with my pets and I know far too much about English history for an American.
Kate the (Almost) Great is my corner of the Internet in which I can talk about my favorite books, what to do in Boston, the blogging and social media lessons I’ve learned over the years, chronic illness, and more. I try to help people find their next five-star read, understand the secrets that make Pinterest send tons of traffic to your blog, what to do in my city, and more.
Part of that “more” is that I try to use this site to educate people on the illnesses I have and that are adjacent to mine, as well as to help other patients. For example, did you know that there are autoimmune forms of arthritis? I share information like that because people regularly are surprised when I tell people that. And I use documented facts about illnesses from reputable sources and I always include links to the original source. It is important to me that I do not perpetuate false information. I am not a medical professional, but since I have been a chronic illness patient since 2001, I try to find a use for the things I’ve learned over the years through helping others. (It should be good for something, right?)
I also spend far too much time on Twitter, where you can find me combining Cleopatra history facts with Lizzo lyrics, waxing on about the chronic illness life, complaining about the T, and more. (Are you really a Bostonian on Twitter if you don’t complain about the MBTA?) You can subscribe to my newsletter, which I try to send out once a week and features blog posts from the previous weeks, what I’m reading, previews of upcoming content, and sometimes free downloads. I have 2 Instagram accounts: mine and my bookstagram account. I’m also on Pinterest and Facebook, and I have a Tumblr.
