One thing that I’ve always wanted to have in my life, but haven’t always had enough of, is volunteering and/or advocacy in some way. I’m all about paying it forward and giving back to the world that we’re living in, and I want to make a difference. I’m hoping to make that a reality when I move into my Big Girl life, but I’m starting right now with some small arthritis advocacy work.
My life as an arthritis advocate is something that I’ve been able to make happen for a while. I feel that by sharing my story and being open about what I’m going through in a positive (well, as much as possible) and informative way is advocacy in some form. However, I want to do more. One way that I could do that was by purchasing a Cure Arthritis Action Pak.
The Arthritis National Research Foundation is a charity that directly funds arthritis research. They’re known for their transparency, efficiency, fiscal responsibility, and research success. Therefore, when they came out with their Action Pak for Arthritis Awareness Month (which is May, by the way), I knew that this was something I could do. $25 towards arthritis research? I could forgo new makeup or DVDs for a few weeks for that.
This is a picture of some of my goodies from the Action Pak. It includes a t-shirt (which is wicked comfortable and one that will be perfect for my bad pain days), a bumper sticker, some other stickers (one of which is now on my computer), a couple of rubber bracelets, a few buttons, and some posters.
This is something that I can do. The message is plain and direct – Cure Arthritis. And it gets it in people’s faces, gets them thinking.
Right now, this is the kind of advocacy that I can do. Hopefully, my future will include more of it.
