Dear Class of 2014

Dear class of 2014,

Congratulations! You did it!

I know that it has been a rough 4 years for many of you, and plenty wondered if this day would ever come to you. I know that along the way you have had friends who dropped out. I know that you have been through and seen many struggles. I know that people sounded incredulous when you said that you were going to graduate on time.

I know that some of you have worked your butts off. You have pulled through to this day with blood, sweat, and tears. Some of you are even heading to college, and I’m so proud of you. You have earned this. You have earned walking across that stage. It’s yours, and no one can take that away from you.

And that’s the great thing about education. No matter where your life takes you, no one can take away your education. You have a high school degree. It may not seem like it right now, but you can’t put a price on that.

To my dear 20ish seniors who I have had as students this year – I’m so proud of you. Sure, there were plenty of days where I couldn’t wait to see you go, but now that it’s here I’m having a hard time accepting that you’re “grown.”

When you walk across the stage today, I hope you are able to enjoy your success before moving on to the next stage of your life. Congratulations!

Ms. Mitchell

I love the quotation about giving yourself the gift of education! To that, I would add that not all education takes place in the classroom, so take advantage of every opportunity! That could be the liberal arts major in me, but I think that is equally important. My academic advisor called them "Waffle House conversations," where you had heart to hearts with your friends late at night and really learned about other people and life.
