Chronic illness is exhausting. Being in constant pain is exhausting. Trying to get everything set for my infusion on Friday and subsequent infusion recovery. ⁣
⁣
If you have chronic illness and/or pain and you're tired, cut yourself some slack. Existing in 2021 is tiring, especially if you have a chronic illness. It's okay to admit that you're tired. ⁣

You don't have to be a crystals person to enjoy her jewelry! I love this sodalite necklace she sent me and I'm generally not a crystals person (except with all the jewelry I've bought from Victoria that seems to be changing ...) ⁣

I'm trying to take a bit better care of myself thi I'm trying to take a bit better care of myself this month. Something I haven't really shared here is that I started a new position at my company at the beginning of the month! It includes new responsibilities and a couple more hours a week (still below 40 because I'm unable to work a 40-hour week). ⁣
⁣
This position is really important to me, so I'm prioritizing that over my blog this month. But I'm also prioritizing self-care over my blog. In the past, working on my blog and my advocacy work has been at the top of my priority list. And they're still in my top 5 priorities! My if I'm going to succeed, then I need to take care of myself. Namely, not pushing myself to the point of breaking. ⁣
⁣
In the name of self-care, I spent some time off of screens this weekend. On Saturday, I spent some hours reading and enjoying a latte. I finished The Glass Hotel, which was absolutely incredible. It was my first Emily St. John Mandel book and I get the hype now. ⁣
⁣
What does self-care look like for you? ⁣

Here is a less-than-perfect picture for your IG fe Here is a less-than-perfect picture for your IG feed. This is what my day's look like more often than other pictures or selfies. Me: lying down. My cat: trying to get as close as possible. ⁣
⁣
I'm at the point in my Rituxan infusion cycle where I basically crash way earlier in the day than I do normally. Some days I wake up, feel vaguely what I imagine non-ill people feel like, and later crash. Some days, I wake up and I just *know* that it's going to be a bad pain day. I've been having too many of those so we recently added Plaquenil to my treatment. I'm on half the Rituxan dose I should be on, but with COVID and my history of nearly dying from my suppressed immune system, that dose is staying right where it's at for a while.⁣
⁣
➡ For my chronically ill followers, has your treatment been impacted by COVID in any way? ⬅ ⁣

Something that can happen if you live with an infl Something that can happen if you live with an inflammatory chronic disease for years and years and years is you can develop anemia of inflammatory/chronic disease. ⁣
⁣
Basically, because I've lived with constant inflammation for nearly 20 years, my body can't absorb enough iron from foods or even supplements. So no matter how much supplements I take, I can't absorb enough iron. This means that I need iron infusions, depending on my iron levels.⁣
⁣
I got my first one in nearly two years yesterday, and I'll get another one next week. After that, we'll see if I need another one. Because of COVID, hematology appointments were one of the things that got paused in order to reduce how often I go to the hospital. ⁣
⁣
And before anyone comments with their "miracle" cure or telling me that I just need to eat more spinach - don't. There is no solution that isn't iron infusions. ⁣

I have gotten way pickier about what topics I writ I have gotten way pickier about what topics I write blog posts about over the years. In 2013, it was basically anything goes. Now, I ask myself a couple of questions whenever I decide whether or not to write a post: ⁣
⁣
▪ Is this topic something I will stand behind in 3+ years, barring learning any new information between now and then? ⁣
▪ Is this topic something I can defend to others? ⁣
▪ Would I want to read a blog post about this topic? ⁣
▪ Is this topic something I want to spend multiple hours researching, writing about, and promoting? (Because my blog posts take at least 5 hours to write from start to finish!) ⁣
▪ Is writing about this topic helping someone? ⁣
⁣
What questions do you have about my blog post process? ⁣

This mug really demonstrates my values. ⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Equality ⁣
2️⃣ Justice⁣
3️⃣ Empathy ⁣
4️⃣ Science⁣

I tried to come up with more to add on to each of these values and what they mean to me. But honestly, I can't say it much better than the mug says.⁣
