Your Guide to Valentine’s Day & Galentine’s Day

It felt like January would go on forever, but I’m still surprised that Valentine’s Day is next week. And you know that means that Galentine’s Day is, too! If you’re unfamiliar with Galentine’s Day, it’s a holiday for celebrating the other women in your life. It comes from the show Parks and Rec, but people thought it was such a good idea that it has become a real thing!

If you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s Day, or both this year, this post is for you. I’ve broken it into different categories ranging from gifts to food, decor to style, and more. I hope you find everything you need for whatever holiday(s) you’re celebrating this year. If you’re celebrating neither and aren’t excited for all the decor and displays everywhere, remember: Valentine’s Day candy goes on sale on February 15.

Are you celebrating Valentine's Day and/or Galentine's Day? Here's everything you need to celebrate either, from gifts to outfits, from decor to food, and more.

One of the things that annoys me the most is when One of the things that annoys me the most is when I say, “I’m disabled” and someone says, “Don’t say that about yourself!”⁣⁣⁣
⁣
First and foremost, saying that promotes the idea that it is a bad thing to use the word "disabled." "Disabled" and "disability" are not swear words! ⁣
⁣
Especially because I *am* disabled. It is a fact. For me, it's not good or bad. It just is.⁣⁣⁣
⁣
I can't work 40 hours per week. I can rarely drive. I'm permanently excused from jury duty due to disability. 3 states have issued me accessible parking placards over the year. ⁣⁣
⁣
According to the Americans with Disability Act, as well as both the social and medical models of disability, I am disabled.⁣⁣
⁣
I know that there are plenty of people who dislike their disabilities. But just because some people do doesn't mean everyone does. And, again, it's just a fact about myself. ⁣⁣
⁣
I feel negative about my chronic illness but positive about my disabled community. ⁣⁣
⁣
Anyway, all of this is to say, if someone says "I'm disabled" in any context, don't tell them not to say that about themselves. One, that implies that disability is always negative, which isn't true. Two, if someone says a fact about themself, don't tell them that it's a negative thing.⁣⁣

Being chronically ill can be, essentially, very bo Being chronically ill can be, essentially, very boring. There's so much time spent doing nothing. But we know that that time isn't "free." It's resting ahead of an event, flaring, or recovering from something. ⁣
⁣
It's incredibly boring. ⁣
⁣
If I'm lucky, I'll read, either on my Kindle or with an audiobook, although it can't be anything that requires a significant amount of brain power. I might play games on my phone. But the biggest activity is, of course, watching TV or movies. ⁣
⁣
How do you spend this time?⁣

WORKING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS⁣ ⁣ I am so fortunate WORKING WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS⁣
⁣
I am so fortunate that I found a job that I love where I work from home and have benefits despite working 36 hours a week. But how am I able to do that since I have 10+ illnesses? ⁣⁣
⁣
1️⃣ I am SO LUCKY to have amazing bosses who don't just follow the law but also want me to do what is best for my body. I am SO fortunate; that's often not the case.⁣
⁣
2️⃣ I work from home. If I didn't, if I had to commute every day, I wouldn't be able to work as much as I do.⁣⁣
⁣
3️⃣ My life is structured so that, after keeping myself alive, the most important thing is that I work enough hours to have benefits. That's why, when I have a tough time, blog posts and social media are the things that slip through the cracks.⁣⁣
⁣
4️⃣ My medical team is aggressive and cooperative. If we didn't know what treatment I need, if I was still in the years-long period without knowing, it wouldn't be possible.⁣
⁣
⁣5️⃣ I have things like KT tape, lap desk, compression gloves, heating pad, etc. that make working on a computer easier on my arthritic body.⁣⁣
⁣
6️⃣ It took several years to get up to 36 hours per week! I started at 26 (and didn't have benefits).⁣
⁣
I don't want people to compare themselves to me without knowing all of these things that are essential for my success. It took years to get to this point, and you're seeing the good side of things.⁣⁣
⁣
