When you live with constant illness(es), it can be easy to only look at the negatives. But having a chronic illness doesn't mean that you can't still have joy. ⁣
⁣
I find joy in coffee, in reading good books. I find it in attending mass and hanging out with a friend. ⁣
⁣
I find joy in trying new recipes and searching for good brownie recipes. I find it in trying (and often failing) to keep plants alive. ⁣
⁣
I find joy in talking to other patients and explaining my tips for getting through subtalar fusion surgery recovery. ⁣
⁣
Joy is not impossible with chronic illness. ⁣
⁣
Where do you find joy?⁣
⁣
PS - This is not meant as a form of toxic positivity. I know that chronic illness is often negative. I'm just saying that having chronic illness doesn't mean that you can never feel joy. ⁣

There are some new faces around here, so I figured this is as good a time as ever to reintroduce myself. ⁣
⁣
Hi, I'm Kate! I'm a millennial from Maine and living in the Boston area. I work for a nonprofit and in my spare time I run a blog and do advocacy work for other chronic illness patients. ⁣
⁣
I live with 7+ chronic illnesses and miscellaneous conditions. I've been in pain since 2001 and have had what feels like a gazillion surgeries and procedures. Almost all of my health issues go back to my rheumatoid arthritis, which took 9 years to get diagnosed. ⁣
⁣
I help other patients live their best lives and their loved ones better understand what they're going through. I've talked to plenty of you directly in my DMs and emails, and while I'm not always timely in my responses, I'm so glad that I've been able to talk you guys through tricky situations. ⁣
⁣
I also read a lot of historical fiction and fantasy, watch a lot of crime procedurals, and do a lot of cooking and baking. I spend as much time as possible home in Maine. ⁣

One of the things I've been working on the last mo

One of the things I've been working on the last month is increasing my stamina, which is freeing and difficult and painful and wonderful. ⁣
⁣
Before my September infusion, my previous one was in December 2023. Combine missing my infusion with getting COVID this summer and I lost a lot of the stamina I had been building up after my surgery in May 2023. ⁣
⁣
But now I'm working on rebuilding it again. ⁣
⁣
As you can gather from the beginning of this post - and your own experience with chronic illness - it has been a mixed bag. I'm trying to push myself enough that I can increase my stamina while not pushing myself so much that I hurt myself. ⁣
⁣
One of the key parts of doing this is going on walks, which is how I took this picture. ⁣
⁣
It gets me out of the house, provides me a controlled way to work on my stamina, helps me work though an audiobook, and see some beautiful sights. ⁣

Like many Americans, I'm stressed about today's el

Like many Americans, I'm stressed about today's elections. ⁣
⁣
My anxiety has been high for the last week, especially after I mailed in my ballot, because after that point, there really wasn't anything I could do. ⁣
⁣
But since it the day has finally come, I'm trying to make it through today and tomorrow. I'm mostly trying to manage expectations so I don't feel too big of emotional swings. ⁣
⁣
For a lot of people with chronic illness, high stress can cause flares. It could be a break-up, a death, losing a job, getting a job after a long period without it, defending your thesis, getting married, a loved one having a health scare, buying a house ... or, you know, a potentially world-changing election. ⁣
⁣
Personally, I scheduled therapy for Thursday. I didn't want to schedule it for before the election because I didn't know how my emotionally different I would feel. Would the whole session be about keeping calm before the election only for that to not matter afterwards? ⁣

For everyone in a similar position, I'm sending you calm emotions and no flares 💖⁣

I can’t “positive think” my way out of chronic illness. I can stay positive while dealing with chronic illness, but that won’t stop the fact that I am chronically ill.

Let's be real: one of the best things about pets i

Let's be real: one of the best things about pets is how they react when you don't feel well. ⁣
⁣
Do I wish that I didn't have health issues? Obviously. Do I love when Harley lays his head on my chest because he loves me and knows I don't feel well? Also obviously. ⁣
⁣
I don't live with any pets at the moment - my parents have Harley and Piper and while I spend a lot of time with all of them, I live elsewhere - which definitely makes me sad. But I'm not at a place where I can have a pet, especially given how much time I spend at my parents' house. But I'm so glad that I can have that time with Harley and Piper. ⁣
